Tips to Save on Gas
Paying for gas is never a fun chore, especially if prices are higher than usual. Fortunately, there are lots of ways that you can save money on gas – and not just when you're at the pump. In fact, you can save money on gas based on the way you're driving, the condition of your car, how you're paying, and where and when you decide to get gas!
Before you fill up your tank with gas, consider some of these tips to help you save money on gas:
Regular Gas vs. Premium Gas. Using a higher-octane gas isn't very beneficial or advantageous in most cars, and it costs about 20 to 40 cents more per gallon than regular gas. Skip the premium gas and go for the regular option unless your vehicle or manufacturer specifically requires premium gas.
Rewards Program. Look into your local gas stations and grocery stores to see if they offer a fuel rewards program. Each store will have its own set of guidelines to follow so you can redeem points, but it may be worth it to help you save money on gas. You can also sign up for programs like GasBuddy, which can help you save up to 25 cents per gallon at most national gas chains.
Cash. Some gas stations may also offer a lower price on gas if you pay in cash. Look into which gas stations near you offer this and see if this is possible for you, especially if you have some extra cash in your wallet! Some gas stations even allow you to get the cash price if you pay with a debit card.
Timing. Studies show that Mondays and Tuesdays typically offer the lowest gas prices compared to other days of the week, especially Fridays and weekends. Try to fill up earlier in the week so you can cash in on those lower prices!
Driving Habits. Believe it or not, the way you drive and how frequently you drive can all affect how much you're paying for gas (and how often you're filling up!). Try to accelerate slowly and coast more, since the faster you accelerate, the more gas you need. Follow the speed limit to further maximize your fuel economy, and use cruise control when you can. You'll also want to reduce your idle time so you're not using gas unnecessarily. Additionally, try to plan your driving routes so you can cut out extra miles. For example, if your grocery store is close to where you work, try to go after work instead of making an extra trip on the weekend. Lastly, carpool with others and take turns driving when you can to help shorten your time spent on the road.
Tires. Rotate your tires and make sure they're inflated to an ideal pressure to help distribute wear and tear and increase your mileage.
Weight. Extra weight in your car will cause your vehicle to drag, so it's best to keep it as light as possible. Remove anything you don't need throughout the vehicle, like a back rack or extra sports equipment, and keep your windows and moonroof closed when driving on the freeway to keep your car light and aerodynamic.
Oil. The next time you get an oil change, make sure you're using the right kind of oil. Synthetic motor oil, while more expensive, will improve your gas mileage drastically. As always, look through your car's manual to see if there is a specific kind of oil you should be getting your vehicle.
Routine Maintenance. The condition of your car can affect your gas mileage and your car's efficiency, so make sure you stay up to date on your car's routine maintenance checks to make sure it's in good shape.
