Safe Driving During Storms

 Cars on a rainy highway

Driving, in general, can be a stressful and sometimes scary skill to master, even in the best of conditions. However, driving during a thunderstorm can be legitimately dangerous for even the most experienced of drivers. If you are caught driving in a thunderstorm, it’s important to know some general safety and driving tips so you can stay as protected as possible.

As an experienced emergency towing service, we know firsthand just how difficult driving in a storm can be. Here are some of our best tips for safe driving during a storm:

  • Avoid The Storm If You Can! The best driving during a storm is not driving! If you can, avoid driving in a thunderstorm. Look up the forecast before you leave and see if there’s a thunderstorm in your future. If there is one in the forecast, it’s best to stay where you are and wait it out. Most storms only last about 30 minutes, so you likely will be safe to drive soon after waiting.

  • Pull Over When Possible. If you are stuck driving in a thunderstorm, pull over and seek shelter inside if you can. If you can’t find shelter, then pull over on the side of the road and turn off your engine. Put on your hazards so other drivers can see you and safely wait out the storm in your vehicle.

  • Metal. Caught in a lightning storm in your car? Don’t touch anything metal, including radio, phone charger, steering wheel, or GPS. If lightning strikes, touching metal could be extremely dangerous, especially if lightning strikes your car!

  • Trees. Try not to seek shelter under trees. If lightning strikes a tree, it could fall over and hit you and your vehicle.

  • Drive Slowly. If you decide to keep driving, try to drive as slowly as possible. Rain can decrease traction, which means more chances for slipping and sliding. Drive slowly, and remember that average driving speeds are never safe in abnormal driving conditions. And never tailgate any other drivers!

  • Car Lights. Always keep your car lights on to increase your visibility to other drivers. Just make sure you’re following local hazard light laws. In Florida, for example, driving with your hazards on is illegal.
